Mali's leader sacks chiefs
President Amadou Toumani of Mali has dismissed his police chiefs, following trouble that led to the abandonment of the country's World Cup qualifier against Togo.

Toure sacked the director-general of the national police force, the head of the gendarmerie and the head of national security, said a statement from his office.

Sunday's match in Bamako was abandoned in the final minute, after irate fans stormed the pitch when Togo scored a goal that left the match at 2-1.

Police used tear gas and batons to combat the pitch invasion, with the riots subsequently spreading to the city centre. Shops were vandalized and tyres burnt on main roads.

A confirmation of the defeat by Fifa, football's governing body, will effectively end Mali's slim hopes of qualifying for next year's World Cup finals in Germany.

Fifa has condemned the violence and has opened an investigation and a formal disciplinary procedure.

Should they order the West Africans to play their next home qualifier, against Liberia on 5 June, behind closed doors it will be the first time such a sanction has been imposed at an African international game.
